Ministry for Ancestors
We are happy to be part of Exp(l)o(re) at the English Theatre Berlin on April 2nd, 2pm to 6pm alongside many other exciting artistic contributions. The ministry will offer its usual services as well as tea and self made pancakes.
We are happy to announce that the ministry was able organize its archive. We currently have a total of 540 documented adoptions.
„Ahnenamt – Minstry for Ancestors“ is Club Reals long time project about a new aesthetic practice of elective kinship. It premiered in 2004 in the „Palast der Republic“ as part of „Fassadenrepubilk. „Ahnenamt“ is one of Club Reals scenic installations – a parallel reality which needs to be entered by visitors to come to life.
It is a mix of ministry and living room – each time reinventing itself according to its current surroundings. Often tea is served, or pancakes made, sometimes we also teach visitors to knit or crochet or offer to cut their hair. Visitors are greeted by the inhabitants/officials of the ministry and enter into a space for dialogue about ancerstors, roots, relations to the past.
The scenic installation is centered around a new cultural practice: the possibiltiy to adopt an ancestor. This is done by choosing a person on an old photograph, giving her/him a name and taking on the responsibility to take care of her/him – i.e. take her/him on as ancestor. So far 540 such adoption have been carried out.
Usually there also is a coffin which can be used to rest inside and reflect upon the transition between worlds. „Ahnenamt“ is a space for reflection, communication about our own ancestors, the importance of roots and the responsibilites we create with personal fictions of past and present relationships.

The ministry was open to all fellow travelers and many came, thereby co-creating our parallel reality and also forming new ancestral ties. Club Reals long time project about a new aesthetic practice of elective kinship goes from Berlin to Wrocław in a train. Travelling visitors have the option to adopt a new ancestor. This is done by choosing a person on an old photograph, giving her a name and taking on the responsibility to take care of her – i.e. take her on as ancestor. A space for reflection, communication about our own ancestors, the importance of roots and the responsibilites we create with personal fictions of past and present relations. We are happy to have participated in Pociąg Kultury Berlin-Wrocław as part of “Wrocław – Berlin. European Neighbours”.

Das Ahnenamt ist ein Raum für neue ästhetische Praktiken der Wahlverwandtschaft. Als szenische Installation ist es wie eine Parallelrealität betretbar. Im Mittelpunkt der verschiedenen vollziehbaren Praktiken steht die Ahnenadoption: die Besucher*in kann sich auf alten Photos eine Person aussuchen, die sie durch das Ausfüllen eines Formulars als neue Ahn*in adoptieren kann. Die Beamt*innen des Amts haben diese Fotos auf Flohmärkten oder im Müll gefunden und somit kann davon ausgegangen werden, daß die Personen auf den Photos keine Nachkommen haben, die sich angemessen um sie kümmern. Weiters werden an interessierte Besucher*innen Adressen von einschlägigen Flohmärkten und Trödelhallen ausgegeben, falls Interesse besteht, die Beziehungen zwischen Berlin und Wrocław durch die Adoption einer Ahn*in aus der jeweils anderen Stadt zu intensivieren. Die formelle Adoptionszeremonie kann dann von den Beamt*innen des Ahnenamts auf der Rückfahrt vollzogen werden. Diese Beamt*innen unterstützen die Besucher*innen auch beim Vollziehen anderer Praktiken, die das Amt anbietet, z.B dem Probeliegen im Sarg und bei Austausch und Reflexion über Ahnenbeziehungen, Ahnenpflege, Verwurzelung etc.
Das Ahnenamt ist eine seit 2004 stetig wachsende szenische Installation von Club Real. 2004 für die Fassadenrepublk im Palast der Republik entwickelt, hat das Amt seither u.a. bei Brut Wien 2008 und bei „Little voids“ Linz 2010 seine Tätigkeit ausgeübt.

Visitors have the option to adopt a new ancestor. This is done by choosing a person on an old photograph, giving her a name and taking on the responsibility to take care of her – i.e. take her on as ancestor. A space for reflection, communication about our own ancestors, the importance of roots and the responsibilites the past lays on us.We are happy to participate in the reflektor festival, and also give a preview on Friday, 27th May, 8pm at West Germany in the evening, where the whole 3 day festival is being presented.
